Cabo San Lucas is the new “it” spot located at the tip of Baja California Sur. Home to an abundance of natural beauty formed between the ocean, beaches, and nature, this gem of a Mexican city has it all. Here, the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean and leaves postcard-worthy backdrops. Culturally rich and diverse with abundant history, this once-small town has turned into a thriving city.
This vacation destination has been gaining in popularity since the 1960s as a fishing spot and then in the late 1970s when the interstate was finished, easily connecting it to California. Since the 1980s, this small fishing village has progressed into a dynamic city that is a tourist destination and well-known for its luxury and beauty. Through all its spectacular surroundings, we like Cabo San Lucas’s centro. This translates to English as downtown and theirs does not disappoint. Generally referred to as the heart and soul of the town, this is one of the best places to see a dynamic mix of old and new. Traditional cultural elements are mixed with luxurious amenities and a modern view of Mexican life for nationals and expats alike. There is a wonderful mix of things to do, food, art, and handicrafts.
What to Do in the Cabo San Lucas’s Centro
When it comes to things to do the downtown area has a ton. While the Marina and the Beach areas have multiple options for water activities, downtown there are a lot of tour companies. Tour companies here specialize in adventure, inland options. The activities range from dune buggy tours to excursions to visit surrounding areas. We recommend Rancho Tours because of their great tour selection, prices, and professionalism. If you are leaning towards dune buggy racing and driving fun, check out the pros at Wide Open Cabo to learn everything from fundamentals for beginners to a full Baja 1000 experience tour.
The Centro Area of Cabo San Lucas
This neighborhood leans on its traditional roots when talking about its local cuisine. Filled with amazing traditional favorites that elevate traditional home cooking, there are some fantastic options. The centro of Cabo San Lucas caters to both tourists and locals alike. While there are innovative, forward infusion menus there are also traditional favorites. The local cuisine encompasses many dining experiences making this a versatile option with something for everyone. We recommend tasting local favorites and regional specialties. While seafood still reigns supreme due to its proximity to water, other delicacies are a must-try. Ranging from tacos, chilaquiles, shrimp cocktails, enchiladas, and chile rellenos. There are so many delicious places to try but we think that one of the best restaurants in the area is Los Tres Gallos. They offer a menu that is steeped in tradition with a new twist and uber-fresh ingredients.
Shopping in Cabo
The downtown area of Cabo is an excellent place to shop. With a wide range of options spanning open-air markets to higher-end boutiques, this is a great place to find high to low-price points. They have Mexican silver, handicrafts from throughout the country, pottery, and blown glass. If you are not looking to shop for trinkets, there is also one of the larger non-chain grocery stores in the area. We recommend Amburo at Plaza Amburo because they offer a wide selection of fruits, veggies, imported goods, and stuff from Sam’s Club and Costco.
A Dynamic Nightlife in Downtown Cabo San Lucas
Lastly, we can not skip the nightlife. This is one of the funner, more vibrant spots if you are looking for nighttime activities. With a bustling nightlife, there are a lot of cantinas, sports bars, and clubs to dance at. We enjoyed Coco Bongo with their unique take on a Vegas-style show that encompasses singing, dancing, and acrobatics with great amenities like a VIP area and bottle service. Another favorite spot to have a memorable night at Cabo Wabo Cantina because they have the best live music in the area. With acts ranging from big names to their nightly local house band, this is the place for good music and good drinks. Cabo Wabo also has the special treat of making delicious comfort food. That means after you have listened to music and had a few house margaritas, you can have some delicious late-night snacks.
